The West Indies, and the Caribbean as a whole, are well-known for Carnival, a beautiful and cultural celebration. However, beyond the surface, there is so much there: cultural pride and affirmation, healing, community-building, solidarity, and so on. In particular, we are looking at how Carnival can be an affirming community and space for LGBTQ+ peoples as its celebrations, embracing of diversity, and so many other factors make it a welcoming and open chance for people to be authentically themselves. Carnival allows people to express their gender identity through close and dance. Overall, it has been a safe space for LGBTQ+ peoples for decades. For this event, our two guests, both students at Harvard, will share with us what Carnaval means to them and to the larger community. They will then lead us in various dances as a shared experience.

This event is a joint effort between the GSAS Student Center, the Harvard Gender and Sexuality Caucus, the Latinx Student Association, the W.E.B. du Bois Society, the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, LGBTQ@GSAS, and Lambda at HLS.

Persons with disabilities who would like to request accommodations or have questions about access may contact the GSAS Student Center in advance of the event.
