A Conversation on Poetry and Gender with Angélica Freitas and Glória Sofia

Freitas & MonteiroAngélica Freitas (Pelotas, Brazil, 1973) is the author of two books of poetry, Rilke shake (Phoneme Press), translated by Hilary Kaplan and winner of the Best Translated Book Award and of the National Translation Award in 2016, and Um útero é do tamanho de um punho , chosen best book of poetry in 2012 by the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte. She has also published a graphic novel, Guadalupe, in collaboration with the Brazilian visual artist Odyr Bernardi. Freitas’ poems have been published in magazines such as Granta, Modern Poetry in Translation, Poetry and The White Review.

Glória Sofia Monteiro (Praia, Cape Verde, 1985) graduated in Engineering and Environmental Management in the Azores, Portugal. Glória is currently pursuing her masters in Management and Nature Conservation in Holland where she lives. Among other poetry sites she collaborates with the online newspaper Cape Verde o Liberal. She is also active in other cultural arenas, attending several poetry festivals and sharing her work across numerous websites and magazines. She participated in the International Poetry Festival in (Curtea de Arges) Romania (2016), (Istanbul) Turkey (2017), Ditet & Naimit Macedonia / Albania (2018). She was nominated to apply for R. M. and P.A.I. Gloria’s poems have also been interpreted by the singer Américo Brito and by the batuque group Lantuna. Her poetry has been translated into more than 10 languages.
