Speaker: Edmundo Jarquín
Edmundo Jarquín graduated with a law degree and a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Chile. In Nicaragua he taught at the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) and was one of the founders of UDEL, the democratic opposition movement led by Pedro Joaquín Chamorro against the Somoza dictatorship. He served in the FSLN government as Minister of External Cooperation (1981-84) as well as ambassador to Mexico (1984-88) and later Spain (1988-1990). He was a member of the Nicaraguan National Assembly (1990-1992) before working at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB, 1992-2005) in Washington, where he was Chief of the Division of State, Governance, and Civil Society (1994-2005). He has also worked as a consultant for a variety of international organizations including the United Nations Development Program. More recently, he ran for office as the Movimiento Renovador Sandinista’s (MRS) presidential candidate in Nicaragua’s 2006 general elections, before becoming the vice-presidential candidate for the main opposition coalition against the Ortega government in the 2011 elections. Throughout his career, Jarquín has published numerous articles as well as edited and coedited several books in the areas of state reform, civil society, and development in Latin America. In 2016 he edited a volume called El Regimen de Ortega, which asked if Nicaragua had witnessed the consolidation of a family dictatorship. He also is the author of a political biography of Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, the 2nd edition of which came out in 2017.
