The 1978 discovery of the Great Aztec Temple in downtown Mexico City riveted the international archaeological world. This monumental shrine dedicated to the Aztec war and rain gods had been buried beneath the city’s main plaza since the sixteenth-century Spanish conquest. Facing a project of great historical significance with demanding scientific challenges, Mexico appointed archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezumato lead the multiyear, multidisciplinary project that ultimately unearthed the Great Temple and its treasures. Matos Moctezuma will discuss the professional and personal transformations that he and his team experienced as they unearthed and interpreted the heart of the Aztec world.

Prior to the lecture, from 5 until 6 pm, program attendees are invited to visit Ocarinas of the Americas, an exhibit at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
Lecture to be delivered in Spanish, with English translation
Free and open to the public.

El descubrimiento en 1978 del Templo Mayor de los aztecas en el centro de la ciudad de México fascinó al mundo arqueológico internacional. Este santuario monumental dedicado a los dioses aztecas de la guerra y la lluvia había sido enterrado debajo de la plaza principal de la ciudad desde la conquista española en el siglo XVI. Con el fin de hacer frente a un proyecto de gran importancia histórica con enormes desafíos científicos, México designó al arqueólogo Eduardo Matos Moctezuma para dirigir el equipo multidisciplinario que finalmente desenterró el Gran Templo y sus tesoros. Matos Moctezuma discutirá las transformaciones profesionales y personales que él y su equipo experimentaron al desenterrar e interpretar el corazón del mundo azteca.

Antes de la conferencia, de 5 a 6 pm, los asistentes al programa están invitatdos a visitar la exposición Ocarinas of the Americas, en el Museo Peabody de Arqueología y Etnología.
