Speaker: Francisco A. Ortega, Professor in the History Department and researcher with the Social Studies Center (CES) at Universidad Nacional de Colombia Bogotá.

Ortega specializes in 19th century intellectual and political history in Colombia and Spanish America. He was a post-doctoral researcher with “The Research Project Europe 1815-1914” at the University of Helsinki (2009-14). He obtained his PhD. from the University of Chicago where he specialized in Latin American history and critical cultural theory. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University Stanford and at the Max Planck Institute-Frankfurt. He also has published on the theory of history and on the relations between social violence history and memory. He is currently preparing a manuscript on the languages of social difference and the cultural political and institutional challenges faced by early Spanish American republics during the late 18th and early 19th. He is the DRCLAS Santo Domingo Visiting Scholar Fall 2017.
