To spark collaborative research between Harvard and Brazilian scholars, we welcome proposals from faculty who wish to invite a team of researchers from Harvard and Brazilian institutions at an exploratory stage to come together in an intensive seminar setting for one to two days to explore common research interests and potentially to design a broad research agenda and external grant applications. Symposia may be hosted either on the Harvard campus or at an academic institution in Brazil. These funds are made possible by funding from the Lemann Endowment.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor employed full-time by Harvard University in any Harvard Department or School.


The maximum award available is $20,000. Grants must be used by June 30, 2021. With adequate justification, the period of performance can be extended to accommodate proposals spanning multiple fiscal years. 

How to Apply?

Applications should include:

  • A proposal of up to 3000 words;
  • Short research profiles or vitae of anticipated participants.; and
  • A detailed project budget that justifies each item.

Deadline: March 8, 2020. All applications will be peer reviewed.

All grant recipients will be asked, as a condition of their acceptance of the award, to submit a follow-up report describing their outcomes and the expenses associated with their project. All recipients must notify the Brazil Studies program of other funding they receive for the same project. Awards will be adjusted in cases of duplicate funding for the same items. Any materials produced in relation to awarded projects must acknowledge the support of the Lemann Endowment, through the Symposia Program of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies as sponsors in all related materials.
