Independent Experience Stipend

Overview

The DRCLAS Independent Experience Stipend supports returning Harvard students in pursuing substantive internships and/or language learning experiences, independently designed and executed, in Latin America and/or the Caribbean. Opportunities planned outside of where DRCLAS SIP takes place (Brazil, Chile, Mexico) will be prioritized for students with demonstrated commitments to the region.

 Note: For independent research-related opportunities ultimately utilized towards thesis/dissertation work, please apply to the Summer Research Travel Grant.  

Eligibility

Currently enrolled and returning graduate and undergraduate students, in good standing and pursuing experiences related to Latin America and/or the Caribbean, are eligible to apply.
 
Students may pursue internships or experiences so long as they directly engage with Latin America and/or the Caribbean. Priority will be given to students whose experience is demonstrated to be directly related to their academic and/or career goals. This stipend is intended to assist living abroad for 8 - 10 weeks.

Application Requirements

Complete the application on CARAT with the following:
• Current Semester's Transcript, with proof of course enrollment 
• Resume
• Budget w/ Expenses Relating to Experience Costs
      • Applicants should submit a detailed budget (made through and spreadsheet) to demonstrate these expenses
• Proof of confirmed experience/internship
• Letter of Recommendation from a Harvard Affiliate  

Review Process

• All application materials must be submitted through CARAT
• Selected candidates will be invited for an interview with the selection committee by March 15, 2024
• Final decisions regarding applicant funding will be sent to all candidates by March 25, 2024 

Funding Details

Stipends will be determined on an individual basis and are based upon review of an accurate and realistic budget, submitted by the student.
